Buy a Toll-Free Number: A Small Business Guide

Before you buy toll free number services, compare caller access, monthly rental, forwarding costs and the features your small business needs.

Before you buy toll free number services, check who pays for each part of a call. With toll-free calling, the receiving subscriber pays the call charge. For your small business, start with three checks: where customers call from, who answers, and your monthly budget. Here is how to decide whether a toll-free line fits your work.

What is a toll-free number, and who pays?

A toll-free number lets the receiving party pay the long-distance call charge instead of the caller. For a business subscribing to the number, that means budgeting for the service and its call charges.

For Simnetic virtual numbers, incoming calls can be forwarded to a number you choose. Forwarded minutes are paid from your Simnetic wallet at the rate shown before saving a destination. Include that cost when comparing the monthly rental.

Our call forwarding guide explains this part of the setup. Before choosing a number, estimate your monthly call minutes and decide where those calls should go.

When should a small business get a toll-free number?

Consider a toll-free line when you want to cover customers' call charges within its supported calling area. Choose it only after checking that you can answer enquiries and cover the ongoing costs.

Start with the work you want the line to handle: sales enquiries, booking questions or customer support. Review your recent enquiries and identify which ones you would prefer to discuss by phone. Set realistic answering hours, including days when you travel or work away.

If you mainly want a separate contact number, compare the available number types first. Our guide to a virtual phone number for business can help you plan those requirements.

Which number prefixes are toll-free?

Somos lists 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833 as toll-free prefixes. In the UK, 0800 and 0808 are Freephone numbers, free from consumer landlines and mobiles for domestic calls.

The prefixes in the Somos list are not interchangeable and may belong to different subscribers. Check the full number before placing it on your website or printed materials.

Ofcom also advises callers using a business phone to check whether 0800 or 0808 calls carry a charge. Choose the number for your intended callers, then confirm the terms for their location and phone service.

Can customers call a toll-free number from any country?

Do not assume worldwide access: a North American toll-free number may be unavailable from a particular calling area. Confirm the supported caller locations with the provider before advertising the number internationally.

Somos explains that access depends on the service area configured for the number. Ask separately about callers at home and customers travelling abroad.

Before launch, arrange test calls from the locations you intend to serve. Ask callers to check their own charges, especially when travelling. Keep an email contact alongside the number so customers have another way to reach you.

How much do Simnetic virtual numbers cost?

Simnetic's US and Canadian virtual-number listings start at $4.99 per month, with toll-free among their available categories. These are country-level starting prices across categories, so confirm the price of your selected toll-free number separately.

Prices below were checked on 15 October 2026 and can change. The virtual-number pricing page shows current options; every market below lists a purchasable toll-free category.

Simnetic offers fixed terms of one, three or twelve months, or monthly auto-renewal. Fixed terms do not renew automatically, and we email seven days before the end. Put the end date in your business calendar when choosing a fixed term.

How do you choose and set up a toll-free number?

Choose a number for your callers' location, then confirm its features, rental term and forwarding costs. Test incoming calls before adding the number to customer-facing materials or business listings.

Use this checklist when comparing the available options for your business:

  1. List the countries where your customers will make their calls.
  2. Check that the selected number supports those callers and your required features.
  3. Review the rental price, term and renewal choice before committing.
  4. Check the forwarding destination and its displayed rate before saving it.
  5. Test incoming calls, then publish the full number and answering hours.

Simnetic tip: The forwarding rate is shown before you save a destination; check it before changing where calls go.

Choose an answering arrangement you can maintain during busy periods and business trips. Review the rental and forwarding costs together when deciding whether to keep the service.

Can a Simnetic toll-free number receive texts or verification codes?

Check the selected number's features: Simnetic provides a receive-only inbox on SMS-enabled numbers. Simnetic does not guarantee WhatsApp, Telegram, banks, OTP services or social apps will accept a virtual number.

On supported numbers, received texts appear in My Virtual Numbers. Sending SMS from US and Canadian numbers is coming soon; MMS is not included. Confirm the features you need before publishing the number as a customer contact.
