What to Do After Landing Abroad: Your First Hour

Know what to do after landing abroad: choose your eSIM data line, check roaming, test your connection and save your hotel details before leaving.

Before leaving the terminal, test your travel data with Wi-Fi switched off. That is our first check when deciding what to do after landing abroad. Then save your hotel details and confirm your transport plan. Use this connectivity checklist alongside your arrival formalities, adjusting the suggested timings around queues and baggage collection.

What should you check in the first five minutes?

Review your travel plan's destination, activation instructions and remaining validity before using mobile data. Check your home line's roaming settings before starting any downloads or opening travel apps.

If you still need an eSIM, check your phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked. Apple explains that an iPhone must be unlocked to use another provider's travel eSIM. Check Settings > General > About for “No SIM Restrictions” beside Network Provider Lock.

For installation, Apple generally requires Wi-Fi or a hotspot, with exceptions for some eSIM-only models. Follow your plan's instructions and our eSIM installation guide. Check its activation policy before proceeding.

For your next departure, work through the travel tech checklist before leaving home.

How do you select the travel eSIM for mobile data?

On iPhone, choose your travel eSIM through Settings > Cellular or Mobile Service > Mobile Data. On Pixel, open Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs, enable Mobile data and select the travel SIM.

Use minutes five to ten for this check. Read the selected line's name carefully before opening your maps or transport app.

On iPhone, leave Allow Mobile Data Switching off to keep data assigned to your chosen line. Apple notes that data then stops during a call on the other line. For other Android phones, follow the manufacturer's instructions for your exact model.

Should data roaming stay off on your home SIM?

Keep data roaming off on your home line if you intend to use the travel eSIM for data. On the travel line, follow your provider's roaming instructions, enabling roaming if required.

Check each line separately before leaving settings. Avoid changing both lines together without reading their labels.

Calls and texts on your home line can still involve roaming charges. Check those rates before using them, even after selecting your travel data plan.

Simnetic data plans do not include a phone number. Keep your plans for mobile data and ordinary phone calls clear when arranging your airport transfer.

How do you test your connection before leaving the terminal?

Test a fresh webpage with Wi-Fi switched off after selecting your travel data line. Then send a short message through your usual internet messaging app and check its delivery status.

Use minutes ten to fifteen for a practical check:

  1. Confirm that the travel eSIM is selected for mobile data.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi before opening a page you have not already loaded.
  3. Search for your hotel address and check the result against your booking.
  4. Send your arrival message, then open the transport information you intend to use.

Google specifically recommends turning off Wi-Fi when checking a Pixel's mobile connection. Finish this test before depending on the connection for your journey.

What should you save during minutes fifteen to thirty?

Save your hotel address, booking reference and transfer instructions somewhere easy to find. Check that you can open these saved details with your internet connections switched off.

Include the accommodation name, street address and any instructions for finding the entrance. For a pre-booked transfer, copy the meeting point exactly as supplied. Read the airport's transport information before choosing your onward journey.

Google Maps supports offline area downloads, with availability limited in some countries and regions. Google also says offline maps lack walking, cycling and public transport directions.

For a public transport journey, save the route details separately while connected. Include the stop names, changes and final walking instructions for your accommodation.

What if your eSIM still has no connection?

Check that your travel line is enabled, selected for data and configured according to its instructions. If it still fails, try your phone manufacturer's reconnection steps and contact support with the error details.

On iPhone, Apple recommends switching Airplane Mode on for at least 15 seconds, then off. Its guidance also includes restarting the device and checking that the selected mobile line is turned on.

On Pixel, Google recommends checking that Mobile data and Use SIM are enabled. Follow the steps for your device one at a time, testing after each change.

Have your order reference, phone model and a screenshot of the error ready for support. Our guide to an eSIM not working abroad covers further checks.

Simnetic tip: Some Global plans allow top-ups; check your chosen plan before deciding how much data to start with.

What should you finish during minutes thirty to sixty?

Confirm your onward transport and send your accommodation or travelling companion an arrival update. Keep your saved address, booking details and support information ready for the journey.

If you use an iPhone, consider Low Data Mode to restrict background activity and automatic downloads. Leave larger downloads until later and focus on the information needed to reach your accommodation.

Before leaving, check your meeting point against the latest instructions from your transfer provider. Agree where to meet if your group separates, and keep a written copy of the destination address.
