Second Phone Number for Privacy: Sign-ups and Selling
Use a second phone number for online sign-ups and selling. Check privacy limits, SMS features, monthly prices and renewal before choosing.
Before adding your number to a sales listing, decide whether buyers need your everyday contact details. A second phone number gives you a separate contact point for enquiries and permitted online sign-ups. Start with three checks: whether a number is needed, whether you can reply, and how long you need access. These matter whether you are selling luggage before a trip or arranging regular enquiries.
Why keep a second phone number for privacy?
Use a separate number when you want to share contact details without giving out your everyday line. Keep that separation consistent by deciding which contacts should receive each number.
For example, reserve your everyday number for people you already know. Consider a separate number for sales enquiries where a phone contact is necessary. Our guide to what a virtual phone number is explains this option.
Your other details still deserve care. Australia's eSafety Commissioner lists names, phone numbers, email addresses and photos as information that can identify someone. Based on that guidance, review the whole listing before publishing, including photographs and your profile details.
Should you use a second number for online sign-ups?
Check whether a phone number is required before adding one to a sign-up form. Use a virtual number only where the service accepts it, and plan to keep access.
For shopping checkouts, the UK's National Cyber Security Centre advises providing only the required details. For other registrations, eSafety also recommends leaving unnecessary optional fields blank.
Simnetic does not guarantee WhatsApp, Telegram, banks, OTP services or social apps will accept a virtual number. OTP means a one-time passcode used to help confirm your identity.
Read the service's requirements before choosing a number, especially for an account you need long term. If it rejects your number, use an accepted contact method through its official process.

How should you use a second number when selling online?
Share it only when a phone conversation is needed, and agree how you will reply. Never send an unfamiliar buyer a verification code received on either number.
The US Federal Trade Commission describes fake buyers who request Google Voice codes to link a new number to yours. Treat that request as a warning, even when the person claims to be checking your listing.
Before sharing a number, check whether you need incoming calls, incoming texts or text replies. This matters with Simnetic: sending SMS from US and Canadian numbers is coming soon. Do not arrange a text conversation through a receive-only inbox. Consider using the marketplace's own messaging tools where available, following its rules.
What can Simnetic virtual numbers do?
Simnetic provides incoming SMS on SMS-enabled numbers and incoming call forwarding on supported numbers. Its SMS inbox is receive-only, so check your reply needs before choosing.
You receive supported messages in My Virtual Numbers. Incoming calls can be forwarded to a number you choose, with forwarded minutes charged from your Simnetic wallet. MMS is not included.
Simnetic tip: Check the forwarding rate shown before saving a destination; forwarded minutes are charged from your wallet.
Keep your travel data needs separate when comparing options. Simnetic eSIM data plans do not include a phone number. If you are deciding how to manage two lines, read our virtual number versus second SIM guide.
How much does a Simnetic second number cost?
Simnetic US and Canadian virtual numbers start at $4.99 per month. These virtual-number starting prices were checked on 15 October 2026 and can change.
Country | Selected listed categories | Monthly price from (USD) |
|---|---|---|
United States | Mobile, business, toll-free | $4.99 |
Canada | Mobile, business, toll-free | $4.99 |
Brazil | Business | $7.99 |
Chile | Business, toll-free | $18.49 |
These are country starting prices from the catalogue. Check the price and supported features of the specific number you select. Choose according to the calls or messages you need, rather than the country price alone.
Remember to include any forwarded minutes when planning your spending. Check the rental term too, particularly if you only need contact during a short sale.
What should you check before sharing your new number?
Confirm the number's features, the receiving service's rules and the rental end date before sharing it. Test the supported contact method with someone you trust before adding it to listings.
- Write down whether you need incoming texts, calls or replies.
- Check the selected number's country, category and supported features.
- Read the rules of each service where you intend to use it.
- Test supported incoming SMS or call forwarding, including any forwarding charge.
- Record where you share the number and when its rental ends.
Protect linked accounts with unique, strong passwords, following NCSC advice. Enable two-step verification, which asks for another identity check when you sign in. Follow each service's instructions when choosing that extra check.
What should you do before ending the rental?
Update linked accounts and listings before you stop using the second phone number. Confirm your replacement contact and recovery methods while you still have access to the old number.
For Google accounts, recovery phone changes can take up to seven days to take effect. Google also recommends a recovery mobile number that belongs to you and that you use regularly. Allow time for each service's update process before ending your rental.
Simnetic offers fixed terms of one, three or twelve months, plus monthly auto-renewal. Fixed terms do not renew automatically, and we email seven days before the end. Add your own reminder to review listings, ongoing enquiries and linked accounts before that date.
