Can You Reuse an eSIM? Check Before You Delete It
Can you reuse an eSIM after a trip? Learn when to keep it, what deletion changes, and how to check top-ups before your next journey.
Home from your trip? Check your travel eSIM before deleting it from your phone. Can you reuse an eSIM after a holiday? Start with your plan's terms: Simnetic offers top-ups on some global plans. For iPhone users, Apple says deleting an eSIM means contacting your provider for a new one.
Use this checklist to decide what to keep, switch off or remove before your next journey.
Should you delete your travel eSIM after every trip?
No: keep it installed while you check whether your plan allows another use. On returning home, Apple advises turning off unused travel lines and checking your main line is on.
Before changing anything, record the plan name, destination and order reference. Check your account or ask support for the remaining data and expiry date. Keep those details with your travel records, alongside the dates of your next trip.
For a repeat visit, ask whether your existing eSIM can accept another data package. For a different destination, check the proposed package's country list before choosing a top-up. Avoid treating a previous successful trip as confirmation that your next destination is included.
Can you reuse an eSIM after its data package expires?
Check your plan's terms or ask support whether an expired eSIM can accept another package. Some Simnetic global plans support top-ups, but confirm eligibility after expiry before relying on yours.
Check the installed eSIM and its data package as two separate items. Ask whether you can keep the installation, then check the package's data balance and validity. Do not assume that an eSIM still listed in settings has usable data.
Before adding a package, confirm which installed eSIM it is intended for. Ask about unused data, the new expiry date and any deadline for adding a top-up. Save the answer with your order details for reference before departure.
Simnetic tip: Some global plans support top-ups; check your plan details before choosing another data package.

What happens if you delete your travel eSIM?
On iPhone, deleting an eSIM means contacting your provider for a new one. To cancel the mobile plan itself, Apple says to contact the provider separately.
If you have already deleted yours, contact support before buying another package. Give your order reference, phone model and the date you removed it. Ask for instructions for that specific order, including whether a replacement is available.
Apple advises against deleting an eSIM for troubleshooting unless your provider directs you to. Start with our guide to an eSIM not working abroad. Describe the error to support and ask what to check before removing anything.
Does turning off an eSIM pause its validity?
Do not assume switching off your travel eSIM pauses its validity period. Check your plan's expiry and pause terms before saving it for another trip.
Simnetic's listed validity is the number of days a plan lasts once active. Compare that period with your travel dates, including any gap between two visits. For a return journey, check the actual expiry date before relying on remaining data.
Before choosing a top-up, ask what starts its validity and when it ends. Also ask whether adding data changes the current package's expiry date. Keep the answer with your itinerary, especially if your departure date could change.
How do you switch off a travel eSIM without deleting it?
Use the travel line's switch-off control: Google documents temporary switch-off separately from eSIM deletion. For iPhone, Apple also recommends turning off travel lines you no longer use.
For iPhone, follow Apple's checks when returning home:
- Open Settings, then tap Cellular to view your phone's lines.
- Check that your main line is switched on for use at home.
- Turn off the travel eSIM line you no longer need.
For Google Pixel, use Google's temporary SIM switch-off steps:
- In Settings, choose Network & internet, then open Mobile network.
- Select the travel SIM that you want to switch off.
- Turn off Use this SIM, without selecting the Erase eSIM option.
Google notes that some of these steps require Android 11 or later. Read the selected line's label carefully before changing any settings on either phone.
When should you delete an old eSIM?
Consider deletion once you have finished with the eSIM and confirmed you do not need it again. Apple also recommends erasing eSIMs before selling, trading in or giving away your device.
If you are changing phones, ask support how to arrange service on the next device first. Do not assume the original installation instructions are suitable for moving an existing plan. Confirm the next steps while you still have access to your current phone.
Before removing the old eSIM, check its label against your order details. Keep any unresolved support request open until you have the instructions you need. Use our eSIM installation guide if support confirms that a new installation is required.
