Want to install your travel eSIM in under five minutes? Prepare your phone and installation details first, but leave extra time for activation. This guide explains how to install eSIM on iPhone, including scanning, manual setup and choosing your data line. Start with the checks below before opening your QR code.

What do you need before installing an eSIM?

You need an eSIM-compatible, unlocked iPhone and a Wi-Fi connection or hotspot. Have your Simnetic installation details ready before you begin the setup process.

Apple lists iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later, with regional exceptions. Check your exact model, especially if it was bought in mainland China, Hong Kong or Macao.

Open Settings > General > About and look for No SIM Restrictions beside Network Provider Lock. This confirms the phone is unlocked for use with another provider.

If you are unsure about your device, start with our eSIM compatibility guide. Resolve any compatibility questions before selecting a plan for your trip.

When should you install your travel eSIM?

Prepare to install before travelling, using the Wi-Fi or hotspot connection Apple recommends. Choose the installation time according to your selected plan's activation instructions.

Simnetic provides installation details after the provider confirms the order. Do not treat the five-minute target as a promise of immediate delivery or activation.

Before scanning, check the plan's activation policy and when its validity period begins. Keep the order details and instructions together for reference during setup. Our eSIM installation guide is a useful companion to the iPhone steps below.

How do you install an eSIM using a QR code?

Open Settings, choose the mobile service menu, then Add eSIM and Use QR Code. Scan your provider's code and follow the prompts to add the mobile plan.

For this method, have the QR code visible on another screen or a printed copy. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings and select Cellular, then Add eSIM.
  2. Choose Use QR Code, opening Other Options first if needed.
  3. Position the code inside the scanning frame.
  4. Follow the prompts to continue; enter a provider-supplied confirmation code if requested.
  5. After setup, check that the new line appears in mobile settings and is turned on.

Apple's UK instructions also use Mobile Service for the mobile settings menu. Follow the corresponding label shown on your phone.

Can you install an eSIM without a second screen?

Yes: on iOS 17.4 or later, press and hold a received QR code in your default email app or browser. Then choose Add eSIM and follow the installation prompts.

If that option is unavailable, Apple also supports entering the provider's installation details manually:

  1. Open Settings and select Cellular or Mobile Data.
  2. Tap the option to add a mobile plan.
  3. Choose Enter Details Manually at the bottom of the screen.
  4. Enter the installation information supplied by your provider, checking each field carefully.

If any installation details are missing, ask support before continuing with setup. Read our eSIM QR code guide for more background.

Which line should your iPhone use for mobile data?

Choose your travel eSIM as the mobile data line when you are ready to use it. If keeping your home line active, retain it as your default number for calls and messages.

Simnetic's eSIM data plans do not include a phone number. Keep that distinction in mind when choosing a default voice line.

Apple lets you give each plan a custom label; use clear names such as Home and Travel. To choose your data line:

  1. Open Settings and select Cellular or Mobile Service.
  2. Tap Mobile Data and select your travel plan.
  3. Leave Allow Mobile Data Switching off to avoid automatic switching between your plans.

With switching disabled, mobile data will not work during a call on your other line.

Should data roaming be on or off?

Turn Data Roaming off on your home line if you do not want home-plan roaming data. On the travel eSIM, follow the provider's roaming instructions, enabling it when required.

For a dual-SIM iPhone, select the individual line before changing its roaming settings. Check the line label each time, rather than changing a setting without confirming which plan it affects.

Keeping your home line active can still incur roaming fees. Check your home provider's charges before using that line abroad.

What do Simnetic global eSIM plans cost?

The selected Simnetic global plans below range from $5.49 to $21.49. Prices were checked on 15 October 2026 and can change before you choose a plan.

Validity is how long the plan lasts once active. Check the destination list and activation instructions for the particular plan you choose. Match its duration to your travel dates before deciding on the data allowance.

Simnetic tip: Some global plans support top-ups; check your selected plan's details before relying on adding more data later.

What should you do if installation or connection fails?

Follow Apple's first checks: toggle Airplane Mode, switch the affected line off and on, then restart. Do not delete the eSIM as a troubleshooting step unless your provider tells you to.

Apple recommends the latest supported iOS version and a Wi-Fi connection or hotspot when resolving setup problems. Check those before trying again.

If installation still fails, note the exact error message and contact your provider. For Simnetic, use in-app help or [email protected]. If the problem starts after arrival, follow our eSIM not working abroad checklist.
