Want to share your travel data with a laptop or a friend? Before relying on an eSIM hotspot, check three things: plan permission, your selected data line and everyone's data needs. Use this checklist before choosing a plan, then follow the setup steps for your phone.

Can a travel eSIM share data with another device?

Yes, a compatible phone can share its mobile connection with a computer, tablet or another phone. Your mobile plan must also support hotspot use.

An eSIM is a digital SIM that works without inserting a physical SIM card. Sharing your phone's connection is called tethering, or using a hotspot.

On a dual-SIM iPhone, Personal Hotspot uses the line selected for mobile data. Check that selection before connecting your laptop. Simnetic's eSIM data plans do not include a phone number.

What should you check before choosing a plan?

Confirm hotspot permission, destination coverage, validity and any separate tethering allowance before choosing a plan. Ask about extra costs, because some providers restrict tethering or charge extra for it.

Make a short list of the devices you want to connect. Include your laptop and any friends who will share the connection. Plan a data budget for their activities alongside your own.

Check your phone's eSIM compatibility and unlock status, then read our eSIM installation guide. Read the chosen plan's activation instructions before installing it.

Simnetic tip: Some Simnetic global plans allow top-ups; check your chosen plan before relying on a refill.

These are data-plan prices, so confirm hotspot permission for the exact plan before choosing. Check its included countries against every stop on your itinerary. Compare validity as well as data, and choose a plan that covers your intended travel dates.

How do you set up an eSIM hotspot on iPhone?

Select your travel eSIM as the line used for mobile data. Then enable Personal Hotspot and connect the other device through Wi-Fi.

  1. In Settings, open Cellular or Mobile Service, then Mobile Data, and select the travel line.
  2. Open the hotspot settings and enable Allow Others to Join.
  3. On the laptop or friend's phone, choose your hotspot's Wi-Fi name and enter its password.

Apple advises keeping the hotspot settings screen open until the other device connects. Once connected, try opening a webpage before starting your work.

To keep data on your chosen line, turn off Allow Mobile Data Switching. Apple says mobile data then stops during calls on the other line.

How do you set up an eSIM hotspot on Android?

On Pixel, enable Wi-Fi hotspot under Settings, Network and Internet, then Hotspot and tethering. On Samsung Galaxy, enable Mobile Hotspot under Settings, Connections, then Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.

Before sharing on Pixel, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data under Settings, Network and Internet, then SIMs. Confirm the selected data SIM on your own handset before continuing.

On the receiving device, select the hotspot from its Wi-Fi list and enter the password. Samsung recommends setting a strong hotspot password to prevent unwanted access.

On Pixel, turn off Data Saver to use Wi-Fi tethering. Samsung notes that menu layouts vary by device and software version, so consult your model's guide if needed.

How can you reduce data use and preserve battery life?

On a Windows laptop, mark the hotspot connection as metered to help reduce background data use. Google also recommends plugging in devices while tethering and switching sharing off when finished.

In Windows 11, open Settings, Network & internet, Wi-Fi, then the connected network and enable Metered connection. Microsoft says this can restrict background updates and app syncing; some apps may work differently.

Agree with anyone sharing your connection before starting large downloads or streaming sessions. Check your remaining allowance after the first shared session, then adjust your plans for the rest of the trip. Our guide to saving mobile data abroad offers more settings to review.

What should you do if the hotspot does not work?

First, check that hotspot sharing is enabled and your plan supports it. For iPhone connection problems, Apple then recommends restarting both devices and checking for software updates.

Test the phone's own mobile connection before trying another device. If that also fails, start with our guide to an eSIM not working abroad.

If the laptop cannot join an iPhone hotspot, check the network name and password, then toggle the laptop's Wi-Fi. On Pixel, recheck that Data Saver is disabled for Wi-Fi tethering. Contact support with your phone model, plan details and the exact error if problems continue.

Should friends share one hotspot for the whole trip?

We suggest sharing for planned sessions together, such as checking bookings or working beside your phone. Consider separate plans when each traveller needs an independent connection.

Apple advises keeping hotspot devices within 10 metres of each other. Before relying on one phone for everyone, discuss separate outings and who will carry it. Use our family travel eSIM guide to plan connectivity for each traveller.
