How Much Mobile Data Do I Need When Travelling?
Work out how much eSIM data to buy for your trip. What uses the most data, example amounts for short and long trips, and simple ways to make data last.
How much data you need for travel depends mostly on one thing: how much video you watch on mobile data. Maps, messaging and browsing use little; streaming and video calls use a lot. This guide helps you choose the right eSIM data amount for your trip, so you don't run out or pay for data you never use.
What uses the most mobile data?
Video uses the most data by far. Netflix says an hour of high-definition video uses up to 3 GB, and Ultra HD up to 7 GB, while its lowest setting uses up to 0.3 GB per hour.
Messaging, email and maps use much less. If you avoid streaming on mobile data, a small plan can last a whole trip.
How much data do I need for a week abroad?
For a week of maps, messaging, social media and browsing, 3–5 GB is a sensible amount. If you stream video or make regular video calls, choose 10 GB or more.
These are starting points, not rules. Think about how you use your phone at home, and whether you will have Wi-Fi at your hotel.
Trip and usage | Suggested data |
|---|---|
Weekend, maps and messages only | 1–2 GB |
1 week, maps, messages, social media | 3–5 GB |
2 weeks, light use plus some video calls | 5–10 GB |
Remote work or daily streaming | 20 GB or more |
Simnetic tip: If you are unsure how much you need, choose a plan you can top up. Each Simnetic plan shows whether top-ups are available before you buy.

How can I make my data last longer?
Download what you can on Wi-Fi before you go out. Google Maps lets you save an area to your phone and use it offline, and many streaming apps let you download shows in advance.
Note the limits. Google says offline navigation works only if the whole route is inside the downloaded area, and transit, cycling and walking directions are not available offline. You can also lower video quality in your streaming apps.
What happens if I run out of data?
On plans that allow top-ups, you can add more data to the same eSIM. Each Simnetic plan shows whether top-ups are available before you buy.
If a plan cannot be topped up, you can buy a new plan for the same destination. Buying a slightly larger plan at the start is often simpler than topping up mid-trip.
Should I choose an "unlimited" plan?
Only if you understand the fair-use limit. "Unlimited" day passes include a daily amount of data at full speed, and after that the speed is reduced.
That can still suit heavy users on short trips. For most travellers, a fixed amount of data, such as 5 GB or 10 GB, is easier to plan around.
How much does travel data cost?
It depends on the destination. On 15 October 2026, 5 GB for 15 days cost $4.99 in Turkey and $6.99 in the USA on Simnetic, and 10 GB for 30 days cost $6.49 in Turkey and $12.49 in the USA.
Prices change, so check your destination's eSIM page for current plans. If you are new to eSIM, start with what an eSIM is and how it works.
