Vietnam eSIM: Data for Buses, Grab and Backpacking
Plan a Vietnam eSIM for backpacking north to south. Compare prepaid prices, prepare Grab, save bus details and choose data for your trip.
Before your first overnight bus in Vietnam, save your ticket, hostel address and pickup point. Check your ride-hailing account works before leaving home, too. A Vietnam eSIM provides prepaid mobile data, but Simnetic's plans do not include a phone number. For a north-to-south backpacking trip, prepare your apps first, then match your data plan to your travel dates.
How much does a Vietnam eSIM cost?
Simnetic offers 1 GB for seven days at $1.99, or 5 GB for 30 days at $7.99. These prices were checked on 15 October 2026 and can change; see the Vietnam eSIM plans for current details.
Data | Validity | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
1 GB | 7 days | $1.99 |
3 GB | 15 days | $4.99 |
3 GB | 30 days | $4.99 |
5 GB | 30 days | $7.99 |
10 GB | 30 days | $13.99 |
20 GB | 30 days | $25.49 |
Notice that the two 3 GB options have the same price but different validity periods. For a three-week itinerary, compare the 30-day option before choosing the shorter plan. The data allowance remains 3 GB; the longer validity gives you more time to use it.
Simnetic tip: Some Vietnam plans allow top-ups; check your chosen plan's top-up details before relying on adding data later.
How much data should I choose for backpacking Vietnam?
Choose your allowance using your recent mobile data use and the number of days away. Reserve part of that allowance for transport bookings and navigation throughout your trip.
On iPhone, you can see data use for individual apps in Settings under Cellular. Review your own figures before choosing between the 3 GB, 5 GB and 10 GB options.
Make a separate plan for entertainment during bus journeys. Decide which videos or podcasts to download before leaving your accommodation. Budget for the final day's hostel transfer as well as your first arrival. Recheck your remaining allowance during the trip before deciding whether to add more.

Will a Vietnam eSIM work on my phone?
Your phone needs eSIM support and must be unlocked for other providers. For iPhone, Apple confirms this unlock requirement for using another provider abroad.
Apple's guide explains how to check: open Settings, then General, then About. Look for “No SIM Restrictions” beside the network lock setting.
For Android, check your exact model with its manufacturer. Google's Pixel eSIM guidance lists supported models and exceptions for older phones. Our eSIM compatibility guide is another useful starting point. Complete this check before departure, especially if someone else originally bought your phone.
Can I use Grab with a data-only eSIM?
A data-only eSIM supplies mobile internet, which Grab requires to use its service. However, Grab's registration guide also requires a phone number and a confirmation code sent to that number.
Simnetic's Vietnam plans do not provide a phone number, voice calls or SMS. Complete your Grab registration before flying, using a number you control. Open the app and check your account before your first bus transfer.
If you keep your home line active, check its charges with your provider. Apple warns that keeping both lines active can still incur home-line roaming fees. Choosing a travel data plan does not replace that check.
When should I install my Vietnam eSIM?
Install on Wi-Fi before departure, after checking your plan's activation policy. Follow that policy when choosing the installation date, so you preserve validity for your trip.
Apple says iPhone eSIM setup generally needs Wi-Fi or a hotspot. Leave time to complete the process before heading to the airport.
- Check your phone's compatibility and your plan's activation instructions.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and open the installation details supplied by Simnetic.
- Follow the QR-code instructions in our eSIM installation guide.
- On arrival, follow your plan's instructions to enable its data connection.
- Test a webpage and your travel apps before leaving the terminal.
On iPhone, Apple explains how to select your travel eSIM as the mobile data line. For Android, follow the instructions for your specific device.
What should I save before a long bus journey?
Save your ticket details, pickup address, arrival point and hostel address before boarding. Add an offline map where available, but remember that Google Maps cannot provide walking or public transport directions offline.
Vietnam's official tourism guide lists open-tour bus links between Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An and Ho Chi Minh City. For each leg, confirm the exact pickup and arrival points with your booking provider.
Keep a screenshot of the booking reference and write down the accommodation's name and address. Ask your hostel to confirm the entrance or meeting point before departure. Treat these saved details as a backup for each transfer, and check that you can open them.
How can I save data for maps and ride-hailing?
Use Wi-Fi for planned downloads and review which apps can use mobile data. On iPhone, Low Data Mode restricts background use and pauses automatic downloads and backups.
Before each bus journey, review your settings for photo uploads, video streaming and app updates. Choose the downloads you want while you still have Wi-Fi. Keep transport and navigation apps in mind when setting any restrictions.
Our guide to saving mobile data abroad provides a fuller checklist. Repeat your allowance check after the first few travel days, then adjust your habits if needed.
What if my backpacking trip continues beyond Vietnam?
Check every onward destination against the countries listed in any plan you are considering. Compare separate country plans with a regional option before choosing for the full itinerary.
Write down your border-crossing dates alongside your flight and bus bookings. Compare validity, data and price for the whole journey. Our Asia eSIM trip guide can help you organise that comparison. Keep your Vietnam dates separate so you can see which allowance you need at each stage.
