Turkey eSIM Block: What Travellers Need to Know
In July 2025 Turkey's regulator blocked eight eSIM providers. What was blocked, whether eSIMs still work in Turkey, and how to set yours up before you fly.
If you are planning a trip and looking for a Turkey eSIM, you may have read that Turkey "banned eSIMs". That is not quite what happened. In July 2025, Turkey's telecoms regulator blocked access to a list of named eSIM providers. This guide explains what was blocked, what the reports say about travellers, and how to prepare before you fly.
Did Turkey ban eSIMs?
No. Turkey did not ban eSIM technology. Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority (BTK) blocked access to specific eSIM providers that do not hold an operating permit in Turkey.
According to Teknoblog, BTK said these services offered mobile communication without a licence, in breach of Electronic Communications Law No. 5809. The restrictions took effect on 10 July 2025.
Which eSIM providers were blocked?
Diken reported that BTK blocked access to eight eSIM providers: Saily, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, Mobimatter, Alosim and BNESIM. The decision was dated 10 July 2025.
Simnetic was not among the providers named in that report. Rules can change, though, so check the latest news before you travel.

Do eSIMs bought before travel still work in Turkey?
There is no official rule on this. Teknoblog reported that some users had trouble accessing eSIM profiles bought before travel, and that it was unclear whether all operators applied the block in the same way.
The safest approach is to buy, install and test your eSIM before you leave home. Then you do not depend on reaching any website or app after you land.
Simnetic tip: Save your eSIM's QR code or manual activation details before you leave, so you can reinstall it without needing to reach any website from Turkey.
How should I prepare my eSIM for Turkey?
Do everything at home, on Wi-Fi, a few days before you fly. That way, any problem shows up while you can still fix it.
- Check your phone is eSIM-compatible and unlocked.
- Buy your Turkey plan and install it at home. Follow our install guide.
- Save your eSIM's QR code and plan details somewhere you can open offline.
- Check the plan's activation policy. Some plans start their validity when you install them, so install those closer to your trip.
- Buy enough data for the whole trip up front, so you do not rely on topping up while you are in Turkey.
How much does a Turkey eSIM cost?
Simnetic's Turkey plans start at $0.99. Prices below were checked on 15 October 2026 and can change, so see the Turkey eSIM page for current prices.
Data | Validity | Price (USD) |
|---|---|---|
1 GB | 7 days | $0.99 |
3 GB | 15 days | $2.99 |
5 GB | 15 days | $4.99 |
10 GB | 30 days | $6.49 |
20 GB | 30 days | $10.49 |
All of these plans are data-only, so they do not include a phone number. Keep your home SIM active if you need texts on your usual number.
Is roaming a good alternative in Turkey?
It can be, but check the price first. Roaming prices vary by network, and Ofcom advises you to "speak to your provider before you leave the UK".
You can also ask your network for a monthly spending limit. Ofcom says your provider must tell you when you are close to it.
